Today, parts of Olous remain submerged, visible to divers in the bay. During the Venetian era, Elounda played a strategic role before its transformation into a stopping point for lepers en route to the colony at Spinalonga.

Spinalonga Island

The uninhabited island of Kalydon, also known as Spinalonga, served as a leper colony in the early 20th century. Its abandoned structures stand as a testament to a dark chapter in Cretan history, but they also offer visitors a poignant glimpse into the past.

Modern History and VIP Appeal

In the 1930s, Mirabella Harbour was a landing site for Imperial Airways' flying boats on their way to the Middle East. Decades later, Elounda became a focal point for international diplomacy. In 1984, Greek Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou hosted a meeting with French President François Mitterrand and Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi at a luxurious Elounda resort to discuss conflict resolution in Chad.
