The ancient town of Chersonasus played a crucial role in the Roman province of Creta et Cyrenaica, becoming an early Christian bishopric and a suffragan to the metropolitan see of Gortyna. Throughout its history, Hersonissos was represented by various bishops at significant councils, including Anderius at the Council of Ephesus in 431 and Sisinnius at the Second Council of Nicaea in 787. The ruins of Roman-era structures, such as theaters and public baths, highlight the ancient legacy of this coastal town.
