The White Mountains' National Park is a pristine natural reserve centered around the breathtaking Samaria Gorge, which stretches from the high altitudes of the mountains down to the shores of the Mediterranean at Agia Roumeli. This national park, the only one in Crete, is a sanctuary for over 450 species of flora and fauna, with 70 endemic to the island, making it a critical area for biodiversity.

Samaria Gorge: A Trekker's Paradise

Historic Landscapes and Rich Biodiversity

Starting at Xyloskalo, at an elevation of 1,230 meters, the gorge carves a 16km long path through the heart of Crete's rugged terrain, offering a challenging yet rewarding hiking experience. The gorge measures 150 meters at its widest and narrows to a dramatic 3 meters at the Iron Gates, providing awe-inspiring views and a palpable sense of adventure.

Trail Highlights

As you descend, you'll encounter significant historical and natural landmarks:

  • Church of St. Nikolas: Built atop ancient temple ruins, this site offers a spiritual pause during your trek.
  • Old Village of Samaria: Once a bustling village, now serving as quarters for park wardens.
  • Iron Gates: Experience the narrowest, most dramatic section of the gorge, flanked by towering cliffs.

Wildlife enthusiasts will appreciate the presence of the kri-kri, Crete’s native goat, often spotted along the craggy cliffs.
