Explore Sougia's Rich History and Scenic Beauty

Ancient Roots and Natural Splendor

Sougia occupies the site of the ancient town of Syia, a flourishing settlement during Roman times. Today, the village blends its historical heritage with the charms of a seaside resort. The long, pebbly beach stretches approximately one kilometer from east to west, with varying pebble sizes and beautiful natural colors, set against the backdrop of crystal-clear waters, known as some of the cleanest in Crete.

Village Life and Local Culture

Relaxation and Culinary Delights

With a population of about 110 residents, Sougia retains a close-knit community atmosphere. It's part of a larger community that includes the villages of Koustogerako, Livadas, and Moni. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely day at the beach, indulge in fresh fish and traditional Cretan dishes at the local taverns, or simply soak up the peaceful vibe that pervades the village.

Beach and Recreational Activities

Sun, Sea, and Serenity

Sougia's beach is famous for its tranquility and natural setting. It is mostly a pebble beach where the sea deepens suddenly at certain points, making it a delightful spot for swimming. Nudism is tolerated on the east side of the beach, affectionately known by locals as "Matala," reminiscent of the village of Matala in the '60s. While umbrellas and sunbeds are available, they are limited, preserving the area's uncommercialized charm.
